Florence Smith’s respect for doctors came to her naturally as the only daughter of Dr. Hy Smith and his wife Julia. Hy Smith was a surgeon who practiced in Norfolk and treated yellow fever victims in the 1870s and ‘80s. He passed away in 1915.
Thirty-seven years later, when Florence Smith died in 1952, she left a $460,000 charitable bequest to her community foundation for a scholarship fund that helps Virginians become doctors.
Now that gift is worth nearly $3.5 million and has helped to educate generations of physicians.
One of those doctors was Ed Lilly, whose distinguished career included service as chairman and vice chair of internal medicine at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and at the (now-defunct) DePaul Medical Center, where he was also chief of staff.
“The Smith Scholarship has made medical education possible for a lot of people who might not have been able to do it otherwise,” Lilly said.
