A New Brand for Anthem

You know them as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the health insurer offering benefits to many in Coastal Virginia. And you’ll still know them by the same name, for now anyway.

In June, the company officially became Elevance Health, with Elevance being a combination of the words “elevate” and “advance.” You’ll hear Carelon and Wellpoint, too, new names for the company’s offerings for select groups. While Wellpoint will unify the company’s Medicaid- and Medicare-related and commercial plan offerings, Carelon (combination of “care” and “lon,” meaning “full” and “complete,” according to a press release) will eventually cover one in three people in the United States. The transition to the name is expected to occur over the next two years.

The hope for the three names? The release notes: to “underscore [the company’s] evolution to deliver solutions beyond traditional health insurance, simplify the health care experience, and advance health beyond health care.”
